My Community and Me

Classroom: OsitosBlog Title: My Community and MeWeekly Feature Theme: Community HelpersWeek: October 28th, 2019 to November 1st, 2019

What are we learning?
Dear Parents,
We hope you are having a wonderful week. We are starting a new theme “My Community and Me.” For the next four weeks, children will learn about the community where they live, the community helpers, and the community public and private places.

During the first week, children will acquire knowledge about the roles of community helpers while they are being encouraged to have respect and admiration towards community helpers for the job that they perform.

This week, they will also be exploring the community they live in through songs, games and other activities. We have scheduled exciting activities related to this theme so children can continue learning through fun experiences. Each one of these activities will help to continue strengthening gross and fine motor skills, language and socio-emotional skills. Below you can find a summary of all activities during the week:

·         Introduction

o    Identify the helpers in our community.

o    Use what-if situations so children get familiar with community helpers.

§  What happens if my dog gets sick?

o    Let children share own stories; i.e. what mom and dad does, etc.

·         Community Helpers

o    Learn the roles of community helpers such as doctors, nurses, policemen, firefighters, teachers, veterinarians, etc.

·         Other Community Helpers

o    Discuss characteristics and job description of the mailman, baker, mechanic, builder, construction worker, etc.

o    Participate in a writing activity: Write a letter to a relative.

·         What I will be when I grow up

o    Pretend play: dress up as community helpers.

·         Weekly Review & Special Project

o    Review what we learn during the week, what our favorite topic was and what else we would like to learn.

o    Participate in a cooking class and learn how to prepare a sandwich.

We would like to invite the parents to join us this week, so you can tell us about your job or role in the community. If anyone of you is interested in visiting us and share a moment with us, let us know to coordinate time and date.

Thank you for letting us play such an essential role in your child’s life and we hope you have a great weekend.

Holidays & Upcoming Events

·         Community Helper Visit Week from Monday, November 4th to Friday, November 8th, 2019.

·         Thanksgiving Day Celebration on Wednesday, November 27th, 2019.

·         Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, November 28th, 2019. The school will be closed on Thursday, November 28th, 2019 and Friday, November 29th, 2019 for Thanksgiving Holiday.

Homework

Children are learning all the time; during walks, car rides, on family outings, and while they play. As parents and educators, we should encourage and support these explorations and games in a creative manner. We consider some examples of the best daily tasks that we can do at home with our kids are as follows:

·         Reading one book from front to back.
·         Stimulate them to express their feelings, emotions, and thought while having a dialogue or during family conversations.
·         Teach kids responsibility while asking them to complete age-appropriate chores or household tasks.

In addition to these suggestions, Spanish for fun! will provide weekly homework assignments to practice skills learned in the classroom. To complete homework assignments is optional.

Below are the homework assignment instructions if you decide to work on them with your child:

·         Homework will be placed in wall pocket envelopes or in your child’s cubby every Wednesday. Please feel free to collect them every Wednesday.
·         Review the enclosed assignments and select one, two, or more worksheets and have your child work on them. Complete all assignment worksheets is optional.
·         Return completed assignments by Tuesday of the following week.

If you have any questions regarding homework assignments, please let us know.

Year-Round Activities
Student of the Week & Traveling Pet

Please make sure to sign up your child for these beautiful activities as these 2 are the children's favorites! These activities allow every child to create and share memories with their classmates. Student of the week will run from August through January and Traveling Pet from January to the end of the School Year.

As you know, every week, a child is given a set week that he/she is the student of the week. On Monday of their week, the student of the week should bring a poster and a book created with family pictures, favorite books, sports, hobbies, animals and other interests. Parents will pick a day to present a banner to the classroom. The student of the week may also bring favorite toys and books to school so they can share with classmates.

As for the Traveling Pet activity, the classroom pet will spend a whole week with the child and family. During that week, parents and the child will have fun together with a new member of the family while providing love and care to the pet. Our pet loves to read at night, go to the park, visit museums, give hugs and kisses! However, the pet does not like taking a bath as he can get sick. Parents and children will enjoy bonding time and making new memories, and the child will be very excited to share all the memories with his/her classmates. In their week, parents and the child should bring a collage of pictures and a written paper containing a brief description of what they did with the pet. Parents should make sure to place the collage inside the traveling pet bag.

Sign up for both activities today! Sign-up sheets are available at the entrance of the classroom.

Friendly Reminders

·         Remember your child to wash his/her hands when entering the classroom and before leaving the school. This is the best way to prevent illnesses.

·         Make sure to bring your child on time so he/she can participate in circle time.

·         Avoid bringing your child with items that can cause distractions such as toys, necklaces, bracelets and watches.

·         Make sure that your child has always an extra set of clothing in his/her cubby.

·         Bring appropriate clothing based on weather and label them with your child's name before placing them in his/her cubby.

·         Remove clothing from the cubby and leave one set of clothing and a blanket for nap time.

·         Take the blanket home on Fridays for laundry and bring it back on Monday.

·         Have enough pull-ups, diapers, wipes and rash ointment in the cubby for the day, if your child has not been potty trained yet.

·         Fill out an administration or authorization form specifying when to use rash ointment.

o    Supply ointments for your child.

o    Label ointments with your child's name and store them in a fabric tote bag.

·         Label food that you bring to preschool.

o    Write your child's name and date.

o    Place food or lunch box in the kitchen. Make sure to put ice packs inside the lunch box.

o    Please keep in mind we are a nut-free environment.

·         Do not bring your child to school if the child has a fever of over 101F or any contagious conditions.

Song of the Week – Comunidad

Conozco mucha, mucha gente en mi vida,
Que siempre ayuda con mucha alegría
Y si tú quieres conocer sus oficios
Jugando vamos a nombrarlos en un ratito
Es l enfermera, es el cartero
Es la maestra de Spanish for fun!
El policía y el bombero
Son los amigos que te cuidaran.
Conozco mucha…
Es el dentista y el granjero
El cocinero…delicias te hará
El carpintero y el arquitecto
Son los amigos que te ayudarán
