My Senses

Classroom: Ositos A & B

Blog Title: My Senses

Weekly Feature Theme: My senses & its organs

Week: From 10/01/2018 to 10/05/2018

What we are learning?
Dear Parents,

We hope you are having a beautiful week. We are starting a new month and with it a new theme called “My senses”. Children’s development is shaped by the outside world through experiences that they have, which include using their five senses—hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch.  This topic will allow children not only to learn which are the five senses and its organs, but also to understand their surroundings and live experiences in a playful way through the perception of objects and use of senses.

Children will also learn how to care and protect their senses, since well-functioning senses not only enable an individual to have a better quality of life, but they also promote longevity by allowing the person to remain more active and independent. Drawing a child's attention to the five senses and discussing them increases understanding of and communication about the world around us.

We have scheduled exciting activities related to this theme so children can continue learning through fun experiences and that help kids use their senses in lots of different ways. Children will see with their eyes, smell with their noses, listen with their ears, taste with their tongue, and touch with their skin. Each one of these activities will help to continue strengthening gross and fine motor skills, language and socio-emotional skills. Below you can find a summary of all activities during the week:

  • Sight

    • Learn about the importance of the eyes.

    • Participate on a hands-on experience: play with colors and give a brief description of objects.

  • Smell

    • Learn about the importance of the nose.

    • Describe unpleasant and pleasant odors.

  • Sound

    • Learn about the importance of the ears.

    • Identify onomatopoeic sounds and voices in recordings.

  • Touch

    • Learn about the importance of the hands.

    • Play with sensory trays.

  • Weekly Review & Special Project

    • Review what we learn during the week, what our favorite topic was and what else we would like to learn.

    • Participate in our art project and create a collage of different textures.

Thank you for letting us play such an important role in your child’s life and we hope you have a great weekend.

Year-Round Activities
Student of the Week & Travelling Pet

Please make sure to sign up your child for these wonderful activities as these 2 are the children favorites! Both activities allow every child to make and share memories with their classmates.

For the student of the week activity, every week a child is given a set week that he/she are the student of the week. On Monday of their week the student of the week should bring a poster and a book created with family pictures, favorite books, sports/hobbies, animals or anything they are interested in. Also, on their week parents and the student of the week may pick a day to present the poster and the book to the class. The student of the week may also bring favorite toys and books to school so they can share with classmates.

As for the Traveling Pet activity, the classroom pet will spend a whole week with the child and family. During that week, parents and the child will have fun together with a new member of the family while providing love and care to the pet. Our pet loves to read at night, go to the park, visit museums, give hugs and kisses! However, the pet does not like taking a bath as he can get sick. Parents and child will enjoy bonding time and making new memories and the child will be very excited to share all the memories with his/her classmates. In their week parents and the child should bring to school a collage of pictures and a brief description of what they did with the pet. Parent should make sure to place the collage inside the travelling pet bag.

Sign up to both activities today! Sign-up sheets are available at the entrance of the classroom.

Friendly Reminders

  • Remember your child to wash his/her hands when entering the classroom and before leaving the school. This is the best way to prevent illnesses.

  • Make sure to bring your child on time so he/she can participate in circle time. This activity starts at 8:45am and will stimulate and strengthen skills in all areas.

  • Read your child’s journal, blogs and Friday Newsletter. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us in case you have any comment or any question about your child’s development or any notes/comments made in your child’s journal.

  • Avoid bringing your child with items that can cause distraction such as toys, necklaces, bracelets, watches, etc. This is needed to help him/her concentrate in the scheduled activities at school.

  • Label all your child’s clothing and items and make sure that your child has extra set of clothing that is appropriate to weather in his/her cubby.

  • Make sure to remove clothing from the cubby and just leave one set of clothing and a blanket for nap time.

  • Make sure to take the blanket home on Fridays for laundry and bring it back on Monday.

  • Make sure to have enough pull-ups or diapers in the cubby for the day, if your child has not been potty-trained yet.

  • Label all bottles and food that you bring to preschool for your child with your child’s name and the date it was prepared and drop it in the kitchen. Please keep in mind we are a nut free environment.

  • Take home the homework blue folder in your child’s cubby and take one or 2 paper sheets from the container that are next to the entrance of the classroom. Homework should be returned by Tuesday and do not forget to bring the homework folder back on Monday.

  • Do not bring your child to school if the child has a fever of over 101F or any contagious conditions.

Song of the Week – La Canción de los Sentidos

Con mis cinco sentidos yo aprenderé
A ver todo a mí alrededor,
Con mis cinco sentidos puedo ver
El cielo con su color.
Escucharte a ti eso me hace feliz
Y sentir el sol sobre mí

Saborear la miel y poder oler
Las flores que hay en el jardín.
Con mis cinco sentidos…...
Poderte abrazar y también escuchar
Mi maestra en Sff
Oler, saborear, escuchar y sentir
El amor que sientes por mi!!
Con mis cinco sentidos….

Poems

Miramos con los ojos
Por la nariz puedo oler
Tocamos con las manos
Sentimos por la piel
Oímos por las orejas
Cuando escuchamos bien
Y con la lengua yo disfruto
Galletitas con miel.

Riddles

Nos sirven para oler, oír, ver
Tocar y degustar
Los tienes en tu cuerpo
Los sentidos

Tongue Twister

Tito ¿Te tomaste todo el té?
Todo el té tempranito lo tomé.
